Sustainability Q&A with the Companies of 10 Hudson Yards

We asked these four companies at 10 Hudson Yards what sustainability meant to them:

How important is environmental sustainability to your business?

Intercept: As a global organization, we are committed to supporting the environments sustainability efforts and have implemented initiatives through operational and procedural changes.

SAP: SAP believes that improving its own sustainability performance gives the company insight to help its customers do the same.

Tapestry: Environmental sustainability is extremely important to our business, our customers, and our employees. Our customers expect us to find ways to reduce our environmental impact, while still providing beautiful and high quality durable products, but our employees expect us to focus on reducing our environmental impacts even more. We see a lot of opportunity to build on many years of progress.

Vayner Media: VERY IMPORTANT

How does your business prioritize environmental sustainability?

Intercept: We value viable sustainable solutions without sacrificing our organizational performance.

Tapestry: In 2019, we established a corporate responsibility strategy called “Our Social Fabric,” which included ambitious 2025 goals focused on three areas of impact: Our People, Our Planet, and Our Communities. The goals under the “Our Planet” pillar are focused on reducing our environmental footprint by the year 2025. These goals address several major impact categories, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20%, achieving 95% traceability of all raw materials, sourcing 90% of our leather from Silver- and Gold-rated Leather Working Group tanneries, reducing water consumption by 10%, reducing waste by 25%, and ensuring that all of our product packaging is made of 75% recycled content. You can read more about our strategy and progress on our goals on our Corporate Responsibility microsite: www.tapestry.com/responsibility.

Vayner Media: In 2019, we completely eliminated paper cups, plastic cups and straws. We now only use mugs for all of our coffee. We also eliminated all plastic bottles, and added a FloWater machine with glasses at the front desk for all of our guests.

How does your business incentivize employees or otherwise support environmental best practices?

Intercept: We have an awareness communication to help change attitudes. In addition to this, we have provided re-useable tote bags for Interceptors.

Tapestry: To support our 2025 Goals, we have an internal task-force that is co-sponsored by two members of our Executive Leadership Team. The group also has representation from all areas of the business. This task-force meets monthly to discuss progress and to drive various work-streams to support and implement environmental sustainability programs in the ‘Our Planet’ pillar and to support work within the ‘Our People’ and ‘Our Communities’ pillar of our strategy.

How might your company support an office culture with a focus on environmental sustainability?

Intercept:We have adopted environmentally friendly practices that may go unnoticed to an individual such as offering eco-conscious office supplies (copy paper, staplers, tissue boxes, etc.) and having no plastic straws onsite. We encourage the reuse of dining ware, cutlery, mugs and glasses supplied in the pantries. Alternatively, we offer compostable cutlery, plates and bowls. There are no waste receptacles at an individual’s workstation or office. Centralized waste management bins, designated for compost, recyclables and landfill, are placed in all high traffic areas.

Tapestry: In April we’re launching an internal intranet page focused on Corporate Responsibility. The site will provide updates to employees on Tapestry sustainability programs, as well as, provide information on how employees can reduce their impacts at work.

How is your company encouraging employees to make environmentally conscious decisions while working from home?

Intercept: We plan on using Earth Day as an opportunity to further promote initiatives to our employees.

Tapestry: On Earth Day, we’re launching our seventh Corporate Responsibility Report, which includes highlights on our progress towards meeting our 2025 Goals. Additionally, we’re hosting an employee event to hear from senior leaders at Tapestry about how we’re reducing our environmental impact as an organization and discussing ways employees can incorporate those efforts into their daily roles.

Does your company have waste reduction or waste diversion goals?

Intercept: Though waste reduction or diversion may not be a corporate goal, we are interested in learning what the available solutions are.

SAP: Our company is focused on three key metrics: environmental, social and economic, and committed to making operations carbon neutral by 2025. Toward this goal, it is working to avoid, reduce and offset carbon emissions and cooperates with international and local e-waste disposal partners to refurbish and recycle its e-waste, among a host of other initiatives.

Tapestry: Yes, we have a goal to reduce North America corporate and distribution center waste by 25% by 2025.
