Inside Edge NYC's New Immersive Experience: A Photographer's Guide to Every Installation

Step inside Edge’s newest immersive world—where light, reflection, and motion transform every moment into a story worth capturing above the New York skyline.

Just in time for summertime activities, Edge has revealed an all-new immersive, multi-level indoor experience to join its iconic 7,500-square-foot sky deck; its largest transformation since opening in 2020. Inspired by the sights and sounds of the Big Apple, this exhibit is meant to be photographed, shared, and explored, so don’t be shy! See it all for yourself at Hudson Yards New York.

The Breakdown: Installations at Edge

PRISM

Starting on floor 4, PRISM is where your experience begins. The city’s colors bend and refract around you through cityscapes, pillars of light, and “slice of life” moments. For capturing content, be aware of the high dynamic range between the shadows and light. Skip the automatic settings and manually adjust your exposure for the best shot.

PULSE

At PULSE, four hundred and fifty color-changing orbs hang from the ceiling, reacting to your movements as you navigate the illuminated space. Mystical and otherworldly, you’ll feel transported to a different dimension as your presence manipulates the environment around you. Similar to PRISM, this is a darker space with bright, effervescent lighting, so keep an eye on your aperture and consider filming rather than taking a still photo to capture the full impact of the exhibit.

SKYRISE

It’s time to move. SKYRISE’s cinematic elevator ride simulates a 100-story ride in under 60 seconds. Keep the camera rolling and take advantage of the interesting planes and perspectives as you get creative with the shots, both in video and still form.

KALEIDOSCOPE

KALEIDOSCOPE brings a childhood toy to life, allowing you to explore four zones that break your world into mesmerizing, evolving patterns. You’ll want to explore the space at different times of day, as the sun’s placement changes the impact. The installation is designed with photography in mind, with specific photo locations set up for you. No two visits will be the same, and the lighting is always different. This is your time to experiment with different settings, filters, and artistic direction.

CRYSTAL CAVE

Step beneath a 25-foot canopy of oversized crystals, illuminated by views of the city, and be awed by a full spectrum of color as light transforms the room. By day, rainbows bounce off the geometric surfaces covering the room; by night, a dark light show transforms the cave into one of Edge’s most striking moments. Both stills and video work well here, as there is plenty of space to pose and take advantage of the natural light.

INFINITE CITY

INFINITE CITY makes you believe anything is possible, and in New York, that’s never been truer. Eighteen columns of lights create a dreamscape of New York’s iconic skyscrapers. With a mix of mirrored and translucent surfaces, you can literally ‘see’ yourself in the space. Here, put all your content creation skills to the test and experiment with the structures, camera flash, unexpected angles, and different lenses.

Lighting for Content Creation: When Is the Best Time to Visit Edge?

The natural lighting and time of day will make a big difference in the atmosphere in some of the spaces. PRISM, PULSE, SKYRISE, and KALEIDOSCOPE are fully illuminated by artificial lighting and away from windows, making a consistent experience. CRYSTAL CAVE and INFINITE CITY all have exterior windows and access to natural lighting. If content creation is your main concern, think about the atmosphere you’d like to shoot in. For a specific look, consider the following:

  • Golden hour hits about an hour before sunset, giving off lovely, soft light and a warm hue. Not only would the view from the outdoor deck be spectacular, but CRYSTAL CAVE would be alive with rainbows.
  • Blue hour follows 20-30 minutes after Golden Hour. Its name gives it away; the cooler lighting makes the colors of REFLECTIONS and INFINITE CITY really pop against the background.
  • Midday lighting might seem harsh, but Edge’s installations are designed for just this, with their own visual identity coming to full fruition at this time of day.
  • Nighttime at Edge offers its own type of beauty. The light show at CRYSTAL CAVE and night mode at KALEIDOSCOPE are the true standouts here.
