The Artist Dirty Bandits Wants You to Be More Awesome

Her wall at Hudson Yards is meant to inspire.

Annica Lydenberg, who works under the name Dirty Bandits, is a Brooklyn-based graphic designer and illustrator—and now one of the artists featured in Hudson Yards’ new HYxOffTheWall 2.0 exhibit. Lydenberg, who has contributed her unique lettering style to Nike, Away and Hudson Yards’ tenant Coach, wanted her piece to give people a boost in these post-lockdown-but-still-challenging times. Here, she talks more about the mural, and why Hudson Yards is the perfect spot for it.

Be More Awesome is located on Level 4 across from PIQ.

On her inspiration:

“People are feeling a lot of anxiety these days. It’s an incredibly challenging time, filled with uncertainty. I wanted to provide a message of hope: You can still do something great in challenging times.”

On how she wants people to experience the mural:

“My hope is that you take a minute to think about what makes you feel awesome—what you’re able to share with the world, what you can do for yourself. And then I want you to go away and double down on that.”

On why she loves HYxOffTheWall:

“I wish more places were doing stuff like this. There are walls in all sorts of public places. Using them to offer a visual break from the commerce-oriented stimuli that surrounds them is a unique and special opportunity.”

On how she sees Hudson Yards:

“I spend a lot of time walking the High Line, and I was so happy when it was finally extended. Hudson Yards provides a magical ending to that wonderful path. It’s the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.”
